Understanding the Terms
1. The Backset
This is the most critical measurement. It is the distance from the edge of your door to the exact centre of your handle (or the keyhole).
Most Australian homes are 60mm or 70mm.
2. The Mortice
Think of this as the "engine" of the lock. It is the metal box hidden inside your door that the latch pops out of.
If you choose the correct size above, you can often swap your old lock for a smart lock without drilling any new holes.
A correct backset measurement ensures your new lock covers the old holes perfectly.
Still unsure? Don't guess. Take a photo of your current lock tape-measure held against it, and email it to us at support@smartaccess.au. We'll help you to pick the correct one.
