Understanding 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi‑Fi
Why Does This Matter?
Many smart home devices such as:
- Smart locks
- Sensors
- Smart plugs
- Smart switches
- Doorbells
- Cameras
are designed to connect to a 2.4GHz Wi‑Fi network rather than a 5GHz network.
This is completely normal and does not mean there is anything wrong with your device.
Why Do Smart Devices Use 2.4GHz?
Most smart home manufacturers choose 2.4GHz because:
✅ It has a longer range than 5GHz
✅ It passes through walls more effectively
✅ It is more reliable for battery-powered devices
✅ It works well for devices that only send small amounts of data
For example, a smart lock only sends and receives tiny pieces of information, so it does not need the higher speeds offered by 5GHz Wi‑Fi.
Why Setup Sometimes Fails
Many modern routers broadcast:
- 2.4GHz Wi‑Fi
- 5GHz Wi‑Fi
using the same network name (SSID).
For example:
ArmstrongHomeWiFi
Your phone may automatically connect to the faster 5GHz network.
During setup, some smart devices become confused when:
- The phone is connected to 5GHz
- The smart device only supports 2.4GHz
The result may be:
- Device not found
- Pairing fails
- Setup gets stuck at 90-99%
- Device shows Offline after setup
Do I Need to Turn Off 5GHz?
Sometimes.
Many modern routers manage this automatically and no changes are required.
However, if pairing repeatedly fails, temporarily disabling 5GHz can often resolve the problem.
Option 1: Try Setup Normally First
Armstrong Smart Access recommends:
- Install the Tuya Smart App.
- Put the device into pairing mode.
- Attempt setup normally.
- Complete the connection process.
If setup succeeds, no further action is needed.
Option 2: Temporarily Disable 5GHz
If the device cannot be discovered or setup repeatedly fails, try temporarily disabling 5GHz on your router.
Why This Works
When 5GHz is disabled:
- Your phone connects to 2.4GHz
- The smart device connects to 2.4GHz
- Both devices communicate on the same network
This often makes setup much easier.
How to Turn Off 5GHz
Every router is different.
Common steps are:
- Open a web browser.
- Access your router settings.
- Locate Wi‑Fi settings.
- Find the 5GHz network.
- Temporarily disable it.
- Save the settings.
- Complete device setup.
- Re-enable 5GHz once setup is complete.
If you are unsure how to do this, contact your internet provider or router manufacturer.
Alternative Method: Separate Wi‑Fi Names
Some routers allow:
HomeWiFi_24
HomeWiFi_5
instead of:
HomeWiFi
This lets you directly connect your phone to the 2.4GHz network during setup.
If this option is available, connect your phone to the 2.4GHz network before adding the device.
What Happens After Setup?
Once the device has successfully connected:
✅ Most devices continue operating normally
✅ You can usually turn 5GHz back on
✅ Your phone can reconnect to 5GHz
✅ Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and other integrations continue working normally
The device itself remains connected using 2.4GHz while your phone can use either network.
Common Questions
My phone says "Connected to 5GHz". Is that a problem?
Not necessarily.
Try setup first. Only change Wi‑Fi settings if pairing fails.
Will disabling 5GHz break my internet?
No.
Your internet will still work through the 2.4GHz network.
You are only temporarily disabling one Wi‑Fi band during setup.
When can I turn 5GHz back on?
As soon as the device has been successfully added and tested.
Does this affect Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or Apple Home?
No.
Once the device has been added successfully and cloud services are linked, these integrations normally continue working as expected.
Samsung SmartThings Users
Many Samsung Galaxy users have both SmartThings and Tuya Smart installed.
Armstrong Smart Access recommends:
- Add the device to Tuya Smart first.
- Confirm it works correctly.
- Then connect it to SmartThings if supported.
This approach avoids troubleshooting multiple platforms at the same time and generally results in a smoother setup experience.
This section will save your support team a huge number of calls because "My device won't connect" is very often a 2.4GHz vs 5GHz issue, and most customers have no idea those networks even exist. It also naturally supports your later Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Apple Home and Home Assistant setup guides.
